“A Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life”
By Hannah Whitall Smith
There are countless books that have enriched my life deeply over the years. Some of these books have been historical fiction, others have been devotionals, some have been rich theological treatises while others are biographies.
However, I must tell you that there have been very few books that have encouraged my “joy walk” as much as the recognized classics of the Christian faith. Books by C. S. Lewis, Spurgeon, Tozer and Wigglesworth have added a joyful dimension to my life that is inestimable. Today, I would like to share with you a little book that I turn to time and time again when my joy is wavering and when my heart is questioning.
“A Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life” by Hannah Whitall Smith is among the most powerful books in my personal library. Written in 1875 by a woman whose husband was an adulterer, Hannah teaches all of us how to choose joy in the very worst of times. The title, while may be construed as “fluffy” or “inconsequential”, fails to communicate the expanse of Hannah’s abandonment to God. Mrs. Smith directs all of us to a full and abundant life that is only possible when we are hidden with Christ in God.
Hanna Whitall Smith actually had the courageous audacity to believe that difficulties are the roadmap that lead one to a joyful life! She has boldly stated what sometimes 21st Century Christianity ignores: joy comes through obedience to Christ. Your life will be a joyless wasteland without the resolute decision to obey His Word.
I love this book, my friends! My tears have splattered upon every page and have planted a desperately desired crop of joy. You will read this book in small portions and savor every word, every experience and every lesson.
And may I just say ahead of time, “You’re welcome!”
